Grant Funding Resources: Home

This guide provides access to free resources for grant writing and seeking sources of funding.

Overview

This guide was created to help you start your search for research funding opportunities.

There are three main places to look for grant funding : the US government, state government, and private foundations and corporations.  While there are many resources out there for seeking funding, this guide points you to a few popular tools for finding each type of resource.

In addition to these more traditional sources of funding, you may be interested in exploring the possibility of crowd funding.

Tips before you begin:

  • Start your research early
  • Be aware of deadlines
  • When you find a relevant grant, see if there is a website to ensure you have the most current information and criteria
  • Determine if the amount of the award is worth the time you will invest in applying for it

How many hours does it take to write a federal grant?

You may need 30-50 hours to write a foundation grant, 60-80 hours for a state grant, and at least 120 hours to complete more complex federal grants. When preparing, it is a must to properly estimate the TOTAL amount of time you will need to finalize the work.

Multidisciplinary education and research centers, state surveillance programs, and global occupational health initiatives complement the breadth and depth of extramural research and training at NIOSH.

National Institute of Health (NIH) Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (ORIP)

ORIP's S10 Instrumentation Grant Programs support purchases of state-of-the-art commercially available instruments to enhance research of NIH-funded investigators. Instruments that are awarded are typically too expensive to be obtained by an individual investigator with a research project grant. Every instrument awarded by an S10 grant is to be used on a shared basis, which makes the programs cost-efficient and beneficial to thousands of investigators in hundreds of institutions nationwide.

State and local Funding Sources

FundsnetA current list of New York State grants and foundations.

New York State Grants Management: A centralized location to find, apply for, and manage NYS grants.

The Community Foundation Locator: Find community level foundations in any area of the U.S.

One of the most reliable routes to find state-level opportunities is to visit the website of the state-level department that oversees your program area. For example, if you work in domestic violence, you would visit the website of your state’s health and human services department to look for listings of funding opportunity announcements.

Private and Corporate Foundation Grants

  • Many public and private companies offer grant opportunities. Looking at the websites of corporations like Ford Motor Co., State Farm, Coca-Cola, Home Depot, Bank of America, Walmart, etc. can lead you to grant application information.
  • Private foundations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation can be found using a search engine like Google, Yahoo, or Bing.
  • Using a search engine can help narrow down possible sources that have funded similar research to yours in the past. The more specific you make the search, the better the results.  Examples:
    • Grants for youth programs in Connecticut
    • Grants for domestic violence nonprofits in Salt Lake City
    • Capital grants Detroit, Michigan
    • Nutrition counseling grants New York City
    • Health care grants Orange County, CA
