Using AI for Library Research

Citing References

AI can help generate citations for your references. Always double check citations generated by AI or other online services though.

These tools can be used to quickly format bibliographic information into a citation, but they make many mistakes. Knowing how citations for your style should look or double checking AI citations against a reference source such as  Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL).

AI will help get the basic components of a citation in order. Most of the AI tools can cite in the major citation styles such as APA, AMA, Chicago and MLA. Each tool works a little differently. Many AI services were tested for this section, but we have only included the two that worked best for most of our citations.

Tools:

* Chatgpt
* Scribbr

Prompt:

Scribbr does not need an AI prompt for this functionality. We will show brief directions below for finding and citing a scholarly journal article.

You can easily prompt Chatgpt though. Upload your article into Chatgpt first. Once the article is loaded you can ask:

"How do I cite this article in APA format?"

Notes:

You can replace APA with the citation style of your choice.

Scribbr Instructions:

Go to Scribbr site. Select "Citation Generator" icon from main page or menu.

1. Select citation style.

2.   Search for the article that you would like to cite using the search box. You may enter the title, URL or DOI of the article.

3. Select correct article from results list.

4. Scribbr will generate a citation. Copy the citation using the "Copy to Clipboard" button.
