Nursing Research Guide

Finding Nursing Theory Articles

Use the CINAHL database to find articles that apply nursing theory to research and practice. Here are some tips on locating appropriate articles:

  • Do an author search for articles written by a specific theorist (i.e.Neuman B or Neuman Betty in the Author field)
  • Do a subject heading search for Nursing Theory or Theoretical Nursing Models
  • Try a focused Subject Heading Search for the specific theory you need. CINAHL has several subject headings for specific models, including Orem Self Care Model, Roy Adaptation Model, Watson's Theory of Caring, etc.
  • Th narrow your search, combine your topic with a specific theory name. For example, if you are seeking information on Orem's theory as it relates to research on patients with cancer, combine the terms and search Orem Self-Care Model AND Cancer Patients.

We have a guide to nurse theorist primary and secondary sources- books and articles- in our collection on many nursing theorists. You can click the links to items in our collection, or request those you cannot retrieve through interlibrary loan.
